PFO Newsletter - 08.07.24

Ever had one of those week’s where everything collides?

This week alone:

➡️ We’re celebrating hubby John’s bday

➡️ We’re celebrating our son JJ’s bday

➡️ I’m hosting the Global Leadership Summit in Chicago

➡️ I’ve launched Season 3 of my new podcast!

While we’re at it, anyone have ideas on what to get a 15-year-old boy for his birthday? LOL. Actually, we’re doing something totally different for him this year and I’m telling you this because there’s no way he’s subscribed to my personal newsletter. However, JJ, if you are, STOP READING THIS. 🛑

We’re buying JJ stock. Like, from the stock market. He’s been incredibly interested in finances and money management, lately. He’s also the kid that says “mom, stop spending money”. So, why not buy stock in one of his favorite companies so he can manage it? Who knows, maybe it’ll grow significantly and help him pay for college, IF he decides to go.

Speaking of college, what a HOT TOPIC this is. When I asked you recently about it in this newsletter, 49% of you said it was worth it. The other half? Welllll, you had mixed reviews. (Enjoy this throwback to ‘97 when I graduated college. Yes, that’s John.❤️)

I’m kicking off Season 3 of my podcast with a series on college and one of the reasons I’m so geeked about this season is because every single episode is something you requested, something you asked me to talk about.

All month long, we’re talking college. Is it worth it? How do you know it’s right for your kid, where do you start, plus when should you begin saving? 🤯 It’s one of the biggest decisions every family has to make and it’s filled with so many emotions.

Kicking off the series is Ron Lieber, the New York Times Money Columnist who has been writing about college for decades. We’re making a case for and against college in this episode. Keep reading to learn more about a helpful giveaway coming up!

Let’s keep talking about the things you’re talking about, friends!

FARIS FAVORITES 🤎

1. COLLEGE!

Let’s talk about COLLEGE! One of the best reads about college and whether it’s right for your family is from our podcast guest this week, Ron Lieber. Ron authored the book “The Price You Pay For College” and we’ll be giving it away at the end of the series, as well as a copy of Ron’s Merit Aid Course. So stay tuned! In the meantime, pick up a copy of his best-seller!

2. Football Season 🏈

Are you ready for some football? College football is just around the corner and I couldn’t be more fired up. If you need some school spirit, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these collegiate door mats from Sam’s Club. (I also highly recommend a Sam’s membership!) They have a ton of schools to choose from and they’re all under $20! In case you’re wondering, this photo is from my garage. #Hail #GoBlue

3. 1440 News!

You know I love news that is impartial and curated by humans, not algorithms! Make sure you check out 1440, which I mentioned above! About their name: the printing press was invented around the year 1440 and there are 1440 minutes in each day. (I knew you’d want to know 😘)

THE PAULA FARIS SHOW 🎙️

LETS TALK COLLEGE: Making the case for and against college with New York Times Money Columnist Ron Lieber.

We’re kicking off Season 3 of the podcast with a month-long series on COLLEGE, where we’re talking to experts and parents about what one college specialist has called “The most emotionally fraught decision many families will ever make.” How do you know college is even right for your kid? WHEN should you start saving? Is it even worth it or necessary, anymore?    Ron Lieber, the New York Times’ Money columnist, has been writing about this topic for decades and helps us untangle the puzzle of college and tells us where to start

TREY KENNEDY: SCHOOL’S OUT FOR PARENT - why it is impossible to buy baby gear.

We’re wrapping our “School’s Out For Parents” series on a comedic note, with comedian Trey Kennedy. John and I had the chance to see Trey perform on his comedy tour and so much of his material is about being a new dad. We’re recapping what Trey says about how fatherhood has changed his life, what it’s like marrying your opposite and how impossible baby gear is to assemble (we’ve all been there!).

Your feedback from last newsletter’s poll…

In our last poll, we asked if you are ready for your kids to go back to school! Here are some of your responses…

➡️ I want routine again but thankful we have another month before we start.

➡️ I’m ready and they are ready too. A routine helps all of us.

➡️ I love spending the summer with my boys. I really get sad when they start school. It is an overall exciting time though.

➡️ Although it creates rhythm, it also creates a confusion that is stressful.

➡️ We homeschooled, so there was no "back to school". I loved having my kids around. For the most part, they liked being at home for school.

➡️ School isn't just beginning......A whole new school year is starting with sports, clubs, classes and fun.  Fall sports - Football, Hockey and later, Bball.

➡️ I was usually ready for mine to go back by the end of the summer.  While I enjoyed the extra time with them. Just as you said it was always good to get back to routines and a schedule.

➡️ When my kiddos were in school, the first day back could not come soon enough! Summers are long and kiddos get bored and Moms get tired!! Of course I miss it all now but I will never forget that first day back to school feel! I always had all my Mom friends over for coffee, snacks and lots of chit chat.
