PFO Newsletter - 07.10.24

Not sure about you, but I feel like I’ve been in a time warp — a vortex of summer, vacation, work, road trips and High Noons. What day is it, even? It’s July something…that’s the best I can do, right now.

(Keep reading to hear how to get rid of those pesky fruit flies, plus a great SUMMER BEACH READ + giveaway.)

We just got back from our road trip back to the Midwest visiting family and I posted this photo on Instagram from our journey…I asked you where you thought this was taken?

The answer is….it was taken on our way back to South Carolina, at the lookout over Lake Jocassee in Upstate SC, recently rated by USA Today as the best swimming lake in the United States. Most of your IG comments thought the photo was from my home state of Michigan.

To be honest, that’s why I love living here so much–from the first time I visited this area over 10+ years ago, it reminded me so much of Michigan. It felt like home…away from home. BONUS: it’s a lot warmer than Michigan, including the lakes! :)

I highly encourage you to add the UPSTATE of South Carolina, including LAKE JOCASSEE to your summer bucket list. The hiking, waterfalls, lakes and stunning views are a must. Plus, the people are wonderful.

While you’re traveling this summer (or commuting to work or taking your morning walk), make sure you check out our SCHOOL IS OUT FOR SUMMER podcast series, as John and I recap our favorite moments from the podcast. This is just a July series and all our guests have one thing in common: they’re parents! We give you a behind the scenes look into the guests, plus their best (and worst) parenting advice.

Keep being awesome,

Paula

FARIS FAVORITES 🤎

1. What I’m Reading

A Happier Life by Kristy Woodson Harvey is the perfect summer read! Filled with mystery, a family secret, romance and small towns, you need to add this best-seller to your list! And, because Kristy is a friend, she’s giving FIVE of you a copy! DM me your mailing address and we’ll get it to you.

2. Get Rid of Those Nasty Fruit Flies!

I’ve been using THESE TIPS to get rid of fruit flies and they work, especially the hot water and vinegar trick. I pour it down ALL my drains, including bathroom sinks and showers, but especially the kitchen sink because that’s where they’re laying their eggs (hundreds of them…gross, I know). Also, if you want to keep the flies away from your food during meal time, these fans do the trick!

3. Summer Salad Recipe 🥗

Trying to eat healthier? I have the BEST summer salad for you and it’s 5 ingredients — arugula, pine nuts, lemon, fresh parmesan and the MAGIC ingredient…HOT HONEY!

Literally throw a heaping amount of arugula in a bowl or on a platter. Toast your pine nuts in a good amount of truffle oil. Watch them closely because they will BURN easy…get them nice and brown!

Let it cool a little bit then pour all the goodness on top of the arugula, squeeze on the lemon juice, throw on some fresh parm (microplane grater/zester is the way to go with a hard block of fresh parm) then plate it up and drizzle with hot honey.

THE PAULA FARIS SHOW 🎙️

Paula and John’s Favorite Moments with Whoopi Goldberg

John can testify firsthand about how far Whoopi Goldberg and I have come in our friendship. Rocky, at first, we are now dear friends despite our many differences. But, our most memorable part of this conversation with Whoopi is where she talks about the many odd jobs she worked to get her break in acting, her journey as a single mom, plus how she got the nickname “Whoopi”.

Paula and John’s Favorite Moments with Rob Thomas

John and I are recapping the very first episode of this podcast, with Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, where he talks about his son (yes, he has a kid!), how they came up with the name Matchbox Twenty and according to him, his “best life advice, but worst parenting advice”.

Your feedback from last newsletter’s poll…

In our last poll, almost 50% of you said College was worth it…here are a few of your responses.

➡️ I think it depends a lot on the kid, their strengths, and interests. My kids are still little (7 and 5), and I can already see a trade school might make more sense for one of them who is very smart but has a high proclivity to tinkering.

➡️ Totally depends on what is right for the person! We’ve been pushed to think it is the best choice, but that isn’t the case for everyone. Seems like more and more people are seeing that!

➡️ It depends on what degree is studied. I'm all for high school career centers, though!

➡️ My fave time was while I was in college. Got to experience so much, met a lot of friends that are still my friends and played sports!

➡️ My answer is actually “yes but . . . “ high price/status colleges are not worth it, but I still think a college degree is important, but only if the student will be going into a field that really requires it.
